Moondance Cinemas
A Movie Ticket Booking App
Duration
August 2022- September 2022
Brief
The project brief was to design a movie booking App for Moondance Cinema. Using existing Cinema booking Apps as precedent, the process for browsing, selecting date and time and ultimately purchasing tickets should be streamlined and easy for the user.
The creation of a clickable prototype
The entire UX/UI design process unpacked below led to the creation of a clickable prototype seen to the right.
Problem Statement
Moondance cinema customers often use the app to browse movies but land up booking their tickets in person, this often causes long queues and disappointed customers when they are unable to book tickets due to sold out shows.
Design Solution: UI Designs
The UI of the Moondance Cinemas app explores the concept of a moody and glamorous movie going experience. The colours were chosen to reflect this golden hour palette which creates a sense of mystery. The design of the main elements intends to evoke simplicity with only main call to action buttons appearing in the signature pink. The UI plays a huge role in achieving the main objective of making the process easy and enjoyable.
High Fidelity Wireframes
High fidelity wireframes seen below outline all the functionality that the app needs to display. These wireframes were used as a way of pairing back the UX to the most simple and minimal user journey.
Design Research
Empathy Mapping, Competitor Analysis, User Flow, User Journey
Empathy Mapping
I put together an Empathy map to better understand the end-user, what they may think, say, do and feel. This was conducted as a way of uncovering missed opportunities for the design solution to best cater to what the user really needs and to provide the best user experience overall.
Competitor Analysis
A competitor analysis was done on an existing cinema that acts in the same region as Moondance Cinemas. Evident below is the tedious user journey that needs to be followed in order to book a movie ticket. The main issue with this app is that the user cannot simply go “back” which means that if they get lost along the way there is no return.
System Flow
The user flow analysis was done as a way of understanding the flow that the user would potentially take in the process of browsing, choosing and booking a movie ticket. This was a practical way of structuring the App before any of the design work began.
User Journey
The User Journey map was laid out as a matrix exploring the tasks & goals, feelings and pain-points that the user experiences along their journey to booking a movie ticket. This user journey matrix is useful in identifying improvements and opportunities that can be made along the journey that can be implemented into the new app design.
Information Architecture
Structuring of the content, usability and functionality of the app was explored through the use of diagrammatic sketching. This was done as a way of structuring the user journey and achieving the most simple and easy to use product without skipping out on any important information.
Key Takeaways & Learnings
The Moondance Cinemas App was the first app design that I have attempted from inception through to a final UI design. I learnt a lot about the process of UX/UI along the way. Future improvements include exploring alternate features as well as simplifying the user journey even more if possible. I look forward to developing my UI skills further following the enjoyable experience of designing this interface.
